Simple Steps in Cleaning AC Filters
Air filters are crucial parts of any air conditioner, as these ensure that an aircon blows cool, clean air into any space. Many AC units also come with special filters designed to remove bacteria and molds from the air, greatly improving indoor air quality and helping prevent health issues.
While professional AC cleaning is always recommended, there are some DIY filter cleaning procedures you can do in between technician visits. In most cases, you can clean your aircon’s main and special filters with just a few household items.
Below, we’ll teach you how to clean aircon filter parts safely and properly.
How to Clean Aircon Filter Parts
Below are some simple steps for cleaning AC filters. These will work for window-type, split-type, and portable air conditioners.
Materials needed:
- Warm water
- Basin
- Soft-bristle toothbrush
- Dry cloth
- Vacuum
Directions:
- Turn off the air conditioner and unplug it from the socket.
- For window-type air conditioners: Carefully remove the front grille of the air conditioner. You may need to unscrew the grille or loosen some tabs to properly remove it. The main filter can be pulled out together with the special filters, if any.
For split-type air conditioners: Gently open the blower unit. On most split-type ACs, the front panel can be lifted from the bottom edge. You can typically easily slide out the main filter and other filters from the unit.
For portable air conditioners: Locate the grille and remove it to access the filters. You may need to press some buttons or slide out some tabs. Carefully remove the filters. - If your AC comes with special filters, you can remove them from the main filter and shake off any dust or debris. Set these aside.
- If the main filter is visibly dirty, you can run a vacuum over the filter’s front and back. Continue vacuuming until there is no debris left on the filter.
- Fill a basin with warm water. Soak the filter in the water for up to 10 minutes.
- If there is dust or debris lodged in the filter, use a toothbrush to gently scrub all over the front and back panels of the filter. This way, you can remove smaller particles of dirt and dust. Make sure to do this carefully to keep the filter intact.
- Rinse the filter thoroughly and gently shake off excess water.
- Place the filter on top of the piece of cloth. Let it dry completely, ideally outdoors.
- Once the main filter is completely dry, reinstall the special filters. Insert the main filter back into the aircon’s front grille.
- It may also be helpful to wear a mask and gloves while you’re cleaning the filters to protect yourself from dust and other particles. The cleaning process is also best done outside to avoid contaminating indoor air.
Benefits of AC Filter Cleaning
Generally, it is recommended that aircon filters be cleaned every month or two. This frequency also depends on the air quality in your area.
By regularly removing debris from your aircon filter, you can enjoy these important benefits:
- Higher air quality – A clean filter can ensure that indoor air is free of dust and minute debris, which can cause allergies and other respiratory issues.
- More efficient aircon performance and energy consumption – Your aircon has to work harder to push air through the filter when it’s clogged with dirt and dust. This affects the aircon’s performance and results in higher energy consumption.
- Optimized AC lifespan – With do-it-yourself aircon filter cleaning, you can avoid premature damage to the AC unit and make the most of its lifespan.
